PSHE

PSHE INTENT - 2020 - 2021

  • To deliver high quality, personalised PSHE education that contributes to well-being and development of life-skills for our students. Support the families of our students and respond to the needs of the Academy’s wider community.
  • To deliver a curriculum that contributes to our statutory responsibility to promote wellbeing in children and young people, as set out in The Children Act 2004 and The Education and Inspections Act 2006. It also contributes to achieving the aims of the whole curriculum and to promoting community cohesion.
  • Our intention is that our PSHE education can make a direct contribution to the Academy Improvement agenda and supports the promotion of SMSC, safeguarding, attainment and achievement for each and every one of our students.

IMPLEMENTATION

  • We take a whole Academy approach, engaging students across the curriculum and at each key stage, while creating an environment, through the Academy ethos, which fosters good relationships and well-being for our young people and teachers alike.
  • Include weekly, structured lessons which are interactive, participative and engaging for all of our students in addition to many ways to implicitly teach, support and enhance PSHE topics through daily interactions and assemblies.
  • Lesson are inclusive of difference, including other cultures, ethnicity, disability, faith, age, sexual orientation and gender identity.
  • Run bespoke workshops to provide additional support to groups of students that may need a more personalised approach
  • Take part in a range of Themed Days / events throughout the year to support and reinforce key PSHE topics and messages and develop students’ understanding.
  • Run Parent/carer Workshops to ensure they are well informed and gain further understanding of their child/ren’s needs and how they can most effectively support them as they develop
  • We ensure coherence and teamwork - including involvement from other agencies where appropriate, including Speech and Language therapy, Occupational therapy, parents, governors and members of the wider community.
  • There are clear elements of evaluation and monitoring of both students and teachers’ perceptions of what leads to increased knowledge and engagement and, where possible, assessing longer term outcomes.
  • Students are assessed through regular marking of work (across three key areas: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World).  There are plans to add additional steps that incorporate SMSC within the PSHE assessment mark books to streamline the two areas and monitor them effectively over time.
  • As students move through the school the PSHE Lead in liaison with teachers, assesses which formal courses would be most appropriate for students.  At present most students in KS4 will study for AQA Unit Awards or ASDAN courses or modules within them.
  • The PSHE Lead regularly meets with the safeguarding team, the pastoral team, Multi-Disciplinary Team and class teachers to address whole Academy student welfare and amend/adapt the curriculum where necessary.
  •

IMPACT

High quality teaching and learning as part of a student centred PSHE programme enables an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for students, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

Specific examples include:

  • Students feel safe and secure. They feel valued and respected (*evidenced through student / parent voice)
  • Students will learn how to keep themselves and others safe and who they can go to for support in a range of situations.
  • Students will demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.
  • Students will have an understanding about relationships, friendships and how to communicate with people.
  • Students will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school which will help with attendance and behaviour.
  • Students will build emotional resiliency and become responsible members of society.
  • Students will embark upon their individual journeys preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.
  • Students will be able to use their learning throughout the other subjects and general life experiences to ensure they strive for their best

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is an important and necessary part of all students’ education and every year group at the Academy receives continual PSHE education throughout the year through the weekly tutorial programme. PSHE is a non-statutory subject. PSHE equips students with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions. There are no internal or external examinations for PSHE.
