Physical fitness is an important part of leading a healthier lifestyle. It teaches self-discipline and that to be successful you must work hard, show resilience, and have the determination to believe that anything can be achieved.

Intent

It is our intent at Venturers’ Academy to teach children life skills that will positively impact on their future.  We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical skills.  We aim to develop social skills and to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.  We aim to develop thinking skills through independent learning, creativity, tactics and decision making.  Health and wellbeing is more important now than ever before, we aim to develop pupils to learn physically active habits to encourage a healthy body and healthy mind for life.

We provide opportunities for all children to engage in competitive sport in school and at local sporting events. Primary

Early Years Foundation Stage

In the Nursery and Reception classes physical education takes a very important role as students begin to gain control of physical movement. Students are assessed for physical development against the early learning outcomes. Opportunities to develop movement are given by teachers who provide equipment for students to use to enhance this. Bikes and other sports equipment are used to encourage students to self-initiate their learning.

Year 1 and 2

Year 1 and 2 students follow the LCP physical education scheme. They develop gymnastics, dance, athletics, ball and team games. They work on skills from the National Curriculum. There are opportunities to take part in other sporting activities through the co-curricular clubs. Year one take part in the annual dance show, with other local schools, run by the Ashton Park Partnership. There is an annual sports day with a carousel of sporting events taking place. Subject leadership is led from secondary specialists.

Years 3 to 6

In Years 3-6, students also follow the LCP physical education scheme. They develop gymnastics, dance, athletics, invasion and team games. They work on skills from the National Curriculum. There are opportunities to take part in other more unusual sporting activities through the co-curricular clubs. Through the Ashton Park Schools Partnership we partake in local competitions including netball, football, tag rugby and cricket. There is an annual sports day that is organized by the secondary and led by the Academy’s Year 9 Sports Leaders. Subject leadership is from the Academy’s secondary specialists.

Secondary

Years 7, 8 and 9

Our aim in PE is to inspire and educate all students so that they understand the importance of maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle.  Our goal is to provide students with a broad and varied curriculum that will help them find the sports or activities that they can pursue into adulthood.  Fun, teamwork, leadership and participation are at the heart of our mission to ensure all students achieve more than they ever thought possible.

Staff have a breadth of knowledge and experience that cover a wide variety of complimentary sports and activities.  We are very lucky to have some of the best sports facilities in Bristol.  These include two sports halls, a multi-use games area used for tennis and netball, an all-weather Astroturf pitch, a state-of-the-art dance studio, use of two fitness gyms, a dedicated sports classroom and four superb grass pitches.

In order to achieve our goals the Physical Education and Sport curriculum aims to;

  • Stimulate and maintain student interest and enjoyment in PE and Sport and to promote health and fitness for current and future lifestyles.
  • Enable students to be familiar with a body of knowledge, principles and vocabulary to relate to PE.
  • To enable students to see PE as a major feature in our lives, related to employment, leisure and culture.
  • To enable students to see PE as part of a wider body of knowledge and skills, eg interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • To enable students to understand and use safe practice and to appreciate its importance in PE.
  • To enable students to understand the short and long term effects of exercise on the body.
  • To enable students to understand the role of exercise in a fit and healthy lifestyle.
  • Enable students to develop a range of desirable personal qualities such as safety, awareness, politeness, perseverance, concern for others, initiative and independence. The establishment of self-esteem through the development of physical confidence is a major aim for the Physical Education department.
  • Enable students to work independently and as part of a group or team in varied activities so as PE contributes to the development of core skills such as communication by speech.
  • Employ teaching methods and resources that will allow all students to have equal access to PE and to experience success and enjoyment in their PE work.
  • Develop an awareness in students of the implications of sport and physical activity (past and present) for the individual and local, national and international communities.
  • Allow students to develop informed opinions and be able to support them in reasonable argument.

All students have over 2 hours of compulsory core Physical Education each week in Years 7-9. The PE curriculum is supplemented by an extensive and substantial co-curricular programme.

In Years 7-9 the main emphasis is on skill development and fun through a broad and balanced curriculum that offers all students the opportunity to engage in traditional and non-traditional games and physical activity.
